What Do You Actually Value Most?

Most of us were never taught to consciously identify our values. We absorb them from family, culture, and circumstance, and sometimes, without realising it, we spend years living by values that were never truly ours.

When that happens, life can feel off. Not broken, exactly. Just  misaligned. Like you’re working hard but moving in the wrong direction. Like something important is missing but you can’t quite name it.

This free exercise is a place to start.

Values

What Is the Values Clarification Exercise?

The Values Clarification Exercise is a simple, guided tool designed to help you identify your top five personal values. The things that matter most to you, right now, in this season of your life. It works by presenting you with a series of values cards. You sort, narrow, and reflect until you arrive at your top five. At the end, you’ll have a chance to define each value in your own words.

There are no right or wrong answers. No grades. No pressure. Just you, getting honest with yourself about what matters most.

It takes about ten to fifteen minutes. And it can change the way you see everything.

Why Does This Matter for Healing?

In my work with trauma survivors across Oregon and California, one of the most consistent things I see is this: people who are disconnected from their values are also disconnected from themselves.

Complex trauma has a way of doing that. It tells you that what you want doesn’t matter. That who you are isn’t safe to express. That surviving is more important than thriving.

Reconnecting with your values is one of the first steps back to yourself. It gives you a compass. Something to orient toward when everything feels uncertain. And in trauma recovery, having that compass can make all the difference.

This exercise won’t replace therapy. But it might be the first honest conversation you’ve had with yourself in a long time.

This Exercise Is for You If…

  • You feel like you’re going through the motions but not really living
  • You’ve been in survival mode for so long you’ve forgotten what you actually care about
  • You’re in therapy and want a meaningful tool to use between sessions
  • You’re not ready for therapy yet but want to take a first step
  • You simply want to know yourself better

Ready to Go Deeper?

The Values Clarification Exercise is a starting point. If what comes up for you feels significant, if you notice resistance, grief, or a quiet recognition of how far you’ve drifted from what matters, that’s important information.  It might be time to explore that with support.

I offer virtual trauma therapy across Oregon and California – a private, confidential space to do this work, wherever you are. A free consultation is always the first step. No pressure, no commitment. Just an honest conversation about where you are and what’s possible.
