Core Beliefs Reflection Exercise

The Beliefs You Carry May Not Be Yours.

Most of us move through life carrying deeply held beliefs about ourselves that feel like facts.

I am not enough. I am broken. I don’t deserve good things. The world is not safe.

These beliefs weren’t born in a vacuum. They were formed during moments when your mind needed to make sense of something overwhelming, and they have quietly shaped your decisions, your relationships, and your sense of what’s possible ever since.

They were never true. But they became part of how you see yourself.

This exercise is a first step toward changing that.

What This Exercise Does

This free guided reflection walks you through a series of negative core belief statements — gently, at your own pace. You’ll identify which beliefs resonate with your experience and begin to see the patterns quietly shaping your life.

In EMDR therapy, naming these beliefs is one of the first and most important steps in healing. When we can name what we carry, we can begin to process it and gradually replace it with something truer and kinder.

It takes about ten to fifteen minutes. No right or wrong answers. Return to it as many times as you need.

Ready to Go Deeper?

Identifying your core beliefs is powerful. But transforming them requires supported, intentional work.

I work with trauma survivors across Oregon and California using EMDR and Internal Family Systems — two of the most effective approaches for shifting the negative core beliefs formed by complex trauma.

If you feel ready to do the deeper work, I’d love to talk.
